Singapore, officially the Republic of Singapore is an island nation in South-east Asia, situated on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, 152 km north of the imaginary line in the equatorial coordinates. To the north is separated by the Straits of Johor in Malaysia, while to the south is separated from Indonesia's Riau Strait. Singapore is the fourth largest financial center in the world and is one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities, playing a key role in trade and international finance. The port of Singapore is also among the five busiest ports, and travelled the world.
Singapore is a country with a long history of immigration. It has a diverse population and nearly 5 million, which consist mainly of Chinese, Malay, Indians and other Asian and European descent. It should be noted that 42% of the population is foreign, present here for work or study. Foreign workers account for 50% of the service sector. Singapore is the second most densely populated country in the world after Monaco and in 2009 reached the highest concentration of millionaires in relation to population, ahead of Hong Kong, Switzerland, Qatar and Kuwait.
Buddhism is the dominant religion in Singapore, practised by 33% of the population. There are monasteries and Dharma centers. Most Buddhists are of Chinese origin. However, Buddhism in Thailand is growing in popularity in the last decade, not only among the Chinese. Tibetan Buddhism is slowly making its way in recent years.
The national language of Singapore is Malay, which is also used for the national anthem. Other official languages are English, Mandarin and Tamil. Since independence, English is the official language used in the population. Road signs and official publications are generally written in English, but the texts are also accompanied by a translation into one of the official languages.
American English is used and is known as Singlish that has many features in common with the creole languages that incorporates words and grammatical forms of Chinese dialects, Malay and Indian. The Singlish spoken in everyday life, but is unpopular in official records.
