New York has been the largest city in the U.S.
since 1790, while the New York metropolitan area is the second largest
urban agglomeration in the world. It was founded as a commercial site
for the Netherlands in 1624. It was called New Amsterdam until 1664.
New York was the capital of the United States from 1785 to 1790.
Set in a large natural harbor on the Atlantic coast of the northeastern
U.S., the city consists of five boroughs: the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Queens and Staten Island.
The city has many neighborhoods and landmarks known around the world.
For example, the Statue of Liberty, located on Ellis Island and Ellis
Island, which received millions of immigrants who came to America in
the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Wall Street's major
financial centers since the Second World War and is home to the New York
Stock Exchange. The city also has many of the world's tallest buildings,
among which are the Empire State Building and the twin towers of World
Trade Center, which were destroyed in the attacks of 11 September 2001.
