Marrakech known as the Pearl of the South or red ocher City is a city in Morocco, at the foot of the Atlas mountains. The city was founded in 1062 by Youssef Ibn Tachfine, first king of the dynasty of the Almoravids. Marrakech has a population of 1,070,838 spread over an area of 6.2 km². The population density reaches 350 inhabitants per hectare. This is the 4th largest city in Morocco after Casablanca, Rabat and Fez. It has the souk (market Berber) Morocco's largest and busiest square in all of Africa, called Djemaa el Fna. Marrakech is divided into the Medina and the modern city. It has several monuments declared World Heritage Site, making it the country's main tourist attraction. In recent years the city has expanded to the periphery, including the West with the emergence of new residential areas in the region of Targa or extension of the Avenue Mohammed VI.
