Madrid is the capital of Spain since 1561. It is also capital of the province and the Community of Madrid. It is located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula. It has a population of 3,232,463 inhabitants and a metropolitan area of 6,043,031 inhabitants, the third of the EU, behind Paris (France), London (United Kingdom).
As Spanish state capital, Madrid is home to the headquarters of the Spanish government (Government of Spain), Congress and the Senate (Cortes Generales), ministries, and major institutions and agencies, as well as the official residence of the kings of Spain . Since the economic dimension, Madrid is a major financial and industrial center, home to the largest securities market in the country, many national companies and some of the largest corporations in the world. From the international side, houses the world headquarters of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and organizes the fair FITUR. Madrid is also an important cultural center and has three international references museums: the Museo del Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofia Museum.
