Los Angeles is the largest city in the state of California and second
largest in the United States. Often abbreviated as LA, Los Angeles
has an estimated population of 3.8 million and spans over 498.3 square
kilometers in southern California. In addition, the Los Angeles metropolitan
area is home to nearly 12.9 million.
In terms of surface area, is the first city in North America and one
of the largest in the world. Extending from the north to the southern

Los Angeles was founded on September 4 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe
de Neve in El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles
del Rio de Porziuncola. It became a part of California in 1821, following
its independence from Spain. In 1848, after the Mexican-American War,
Los Angeles and California were purchased as part of the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo, thus becoming part of the United States.
It is a great centers of cultural, economic, scientific and entertainment
world. The city hosted two Olympics (1932 and 1984) and is home to several
cultural and scientific institutions.
