London is the capital of the United Kingdom and one of the largest cities in Europe. It is located south of the island of Great Britain, and a few miles from the Channel, which separates the UK from France. To the north lies the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire in the west counties of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire while to the south are the Kent and Surrey.
The Thames flows through the city from west to east and divides it into two. Its shores, however, are united by numerous tunnels and bridges, the most famous of which is the Tower Bridge or Tower Bridge, Gothic style.
London has a diverse population, with many cultures, religions and more than 300 languages are spoken. In 2006 the official population of 7,512,400 was within the limits of Greater London and is the most populated municipality in the European Union. In 2001, the Greater London Urban Area had a population of 8,278,251, and its metropolitan area is estimated to have a population of between 12 and 14 million. London will host the 2012 Summer Olympics.
