Cancun is a city of international tourism development certified by the World Tourism Organization UNWTO UNWTO. Located on the northeast coast of the state of Quintana Roo in southeastern Mexico in more than 1700 km from Mexico City, the project began operations in 1974 as Planned Comprehensive Center, pioneer Fonatur (Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo), formerly known as INFRATUR.
In a few years, had a remarkable transformation since being an island of fishermen surrounded by virgin forest and beaches unknown at present, is along with Acapulco, the Mexican resort renowned the world over. Politically is the head of the municipality of Benito Juárez, the state of Quintana Roo. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) through its foundation UNWTO-Themis Prize was awarded Best of Best "in excellence and governance" in escrow of Tourism Cancun on February 3, 2007 . Cancun becomes this way in a body backed by the Department of Education and Knowledge Management of the WTO.
