Cairo is the capital and largest city
of Egypt and the largest of the entire African continent and the Arab
world. It has a population of 7,787,000 people, according to statistics,
represents 10.73% of the total population of Egypt. The population
of the metropolitan area of Cairo, is 20 and a half million people.
There is also what is known as the Greater Cairo, is an administrative
entity including Cairo, Giza, Shubra al-Khaimah and the surrounding area
of the province, plus the provinces of Qaliubiya Helwan.
While Al-Qahirah is the official name of the city, in Arabic, the Egyptians
often refer to it simply as MISR (the Arabic name for Egypt itself.)
Cairo was founded by the Fatimids Caliphate, replacing wood as a seat
of government, and acts as the capital of Egypt ever since.
Cairo has a mix of history and cultural sites modern. This includes the
pyramids, the Church Colgante the Salado Citadel, the Virgin of the Tree,
the Sphinx, and Heliopolis, Al-Azhar, the Mosque of Amr ibn al-A'as,
Saqqara, The Tower Cairo and the Old City. Cairo is called "The
city of a thousand minarets."
