The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina, currently the third largest in South America after Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Located on the southern bank of the River Plate, the southeast coast of South America (Montevideo, Uruguay's capital, lies across the river).
It has a population of 3,050,728 inhabitants according to the census of 2008 and more than 13 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area is the second largest city in South America and one of the world's largest urban centers.
The city is a major economic center, financial, industrial and cultural. The fact that in Buenos Aires there are universities in the country make it a great academic center.
The city was chosen as the design capital in 2005 by UNESCO.
