Amsterdam is the capital and largest city in
the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland. Its name
derives from a dam on
the Amstel river. The city is known for its historic port, the internationally
renowned museums, the red area, its liberal coffee shops, and its
many canals which have led to Amsterdam, to be known as the "Venice
of the North". Amsterdam has 735,526 inhabitants, while its
metropolitan area has about 1,450,000 inhabitants. It is the center
of a major urban area called Randstad, stretching from Rotterdam
to Amsterdam and Utrecht, and has about 6.5 million inhabitants.
The city is known for its financial sector, and is considered the fifth
European financial center.
