Acapulco is a city and port located in the Mexican
state of Guerrero, in southwestern Peru. Head of the municipality's
namesake and one of the major tourist destinations in the world.
Semicircular bay was named after St. Lucia for the day of its discovery
by Spanish sailors. Acapulco is divided into three main tourist areas
known as Traditional Acapulco, Acapulco Gold and Acapulco Diamante.
The word comes from the Nahuatl Acapulco: Acatlan (reed or cane), Polo
(destroy or obliterate) and co (village or place), which together mean "In
the place it was razed and destroyed the sugarcane growers. There is
another version which indicates that probably comes from: Acatlan (cane),
pul (up) and co (place), "place of big reeds". While some authors
accept the first, the Academic Society of Historians agree that the second
is a more accurate translation, especially because usually called Bamboo
cane arrived long after the Spanish conquest, while the corn stalk is
obviously indigenously. Moreover, it has been suggested that the word
derives from the Latin words aqua (water) and pulchra (clean or beautiful).
On 27 June 1873 as a tribute to then recently deceased former president
Benito Juárez, the town was renamed to the official name of Acapulco.
